Let’s Keep Baton Rouge Litter Free
NAME | River
GRADE | 2
LOCATION | Baton Rouge, Louisiana
River, a 2nd grader from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is hosting litter clean-ups, with the goal of getting as many young people involved in cleaning up the city as possible. He was inspired to tackle the litter in his community after participating in a clean-up with a local volunteer group.
Being a part of the event made River want to get all of his friends involved and spread awareness about the problem. He has already partnered with his school to host a litter clean-up event, which 100 people attended – they collectively picked up 25 bags of trash from around the school! Now, he aims to spread awareness and get more schools and young people involved, even visiting groups of young people to read to them about the negative effects of littering.

After volunteering to clean up litter around our city with a local volunteer group I was inspired to not only get all my friends involved but to also help inspire all kids to stop littering.
I came up with the idea to do a partnered litter clean up with my school. We had over 100 volunteers show up and picked up 25 bags of litter from the area around our school.
Our next goal and the inspiration for this project is to get as many other schools involved to spread awareness. I heard a statistic that said 80% of people who attend one litter clean up never litter again so the goal is to teach kids young to hopefully eliminate our litter problem.
Our solution is simple. Spread awareness and Educate and get as many kids involved in litter clean ups around the city.
Besides organizing clean-ups, my mom and I want to get our volunteer group to go read to kids about litter and how it ruins our city and our waterways.
My team is my mom, and the founder of the litter clean up group I volunteer with. She had a group of dedicated volunteers that clean up litter 6 days a week around our city.
