Climate Cardinals

NAME | Robert

GRADE | 9

LOCATION | Lititz, Pennsylvania

Robert, a 9th grader from Lititz, Pennsylvania, is tackling climate misinformation and education, specifically in non-English-speaking countries, through translating important climate news into different languages. He’s building a network of global volunteers and working towards spreading climate education that’s inclusive of multiple languages.

Robert is passionate about climate education and knew he wanted to reach young people, but in his research, he realized that language barriers leave so many young people at a disadvantage and unable to take action on important climate issues. He plans to expand the Climate Cardinals volunteer network, collaborate with more organizations and schools, and launch an online platform where users can access materials in different languages.

Climate Cardinals is focused on solving the problem of climate misinformation and the lack of access to climate education, particularly in non-English-speaking communities. The organization recognizes that many people worldwide, especially in regions most impacted by climate change, do not have access to accurate, accessible climate information in their native languages. This gap in knowledge prevents people from fully understanding the climate crisis, which limits their ability to take action or advocate for change.

Discovered the problem through interest in climate education and sustainability. Given the pressing need for global collaboration to address the climate crisis, I realized that educating young people—who will be the future leaders and innovators—is essential for fostering widespread change. But for many communities, language barriers, lack of resources, and inadequate climate curricula leave them at a disadvantage. Climate Cardinals is working to bridge that gap by translating crucial climate science into different languages, ensuring that more people can engage with climate solutions.

This problem is important to me because it’s not just about awareness; it's about empowering people to act. Climate change is a global issue, and for real, lasting change to occur, everyone needs to be on the same page, regardless of their background or language. Helping diverse communities access the knowledge to address environmental issues aligns with my commitment to sustainability, education, and ensuring equitable access to crucial resources.

Climate Cardinals’ solution is to break down language barriers that prevent communities from accessing climate change education and information. The organization works by translating critical climate science and news into various languages, ensuring that people from all over the world, especially those in vulnerable communities, can understand the issues impacting them and engage in climate action.

The idea behind Climate Cardinals was born out of the recognition that climate change is a global problem that requires global solutions, yet language barriers often hinder many people from receiving the education they need to make informed decisions. The founders, motivated by their passion for both climate advocacy and the power of youth action, saw a way to empower young people by giving them the tools to make climate information more accessible. By creating a global network of volunteers who translate climate content into dozens of languages, the organization aims to expand the reach and impact of climate education.

Climate Cardinals’ next three steps to carry the idea forward include:

  1. Expanding their volunteer network: They plan to recruit more volunteers across different languages and regions to increase the volume of translated content and ensure that the most affected areas are reached.

  2. Strengthening partnerships with organizations and schools: By collaborating with educational institutions, NGOs, and climate organizations, they aim to bring climate literacy into classrooms and community centers across the world.

  3. Launching a new online platform: They plan to create a more user-friendly digital platform that will make it easier for people to access translated materials and allow for further collaboration and outreach.

As for upcoming events or workshops, Climate Cardinals has ongoing initiatives and campaigns, including collaborative projects with climate-focused groups and educational webinars aimed at raising awareness about climate literacy. They often organize virtual workshops, particularly focused on young people, to teach about climate communication, the importance of climate education, and how to engage with local communities. They might also plan advocacy events, outreach campaigns, or hackathons in the coming months to grow their impact and encourage more youth to get involved.

I have many teams from chapter directors to people operations. They help me manage the volunteers and scale the work of club presidents and chapter.

I empower them with resources, giving them the webinar tool kits to host presentations and help by collaborating to find new solutions to do outreach.
